[Welcome]

Welcome to the home page of the Aloha Chapter, an affiliate of the Military Officers' Association of America (MOAA)!  We are pleased that you want to learn more about who we are and what we do.

According to the PREAMBLE of our Bylaws, "As Hawaii is the most unique State of all these United States of America because of its ethnic and cultural diversity, this organization of men and women who serve or have served in the nation's uniformed services, National Guard, and reserve components, as well as their spouses or their widows and widowers, must be reflective of that diversity.  The understanding and appreciation of that diversity underlie the essence of it name "Aloha" and the rainbow in its logo represents the many ethnicities, cultures, and service components of its members."

If you are an active duty or retired officer of any branch of the military, you are welcome to join in our fellowship at our monthly luncheon meeting. Your spouse may accompany you. Sometimes we have dinner meetings. Guests/prospective members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining our friendly group after checking us out, please click on the "How to Reach Us" page for another link on that page to download a Membership Application form.

Scholarships
The Aloha Chapter Scholarship Fund Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) has announced a new concept for its scholarship program for Academic Year 2008-2009. The scholarship grants will remain identical to past years - ranging from five hundred dollars ($500) to one thousand dollars ($1000). The fields of study are similar to those of previous years which includes teaching, nursing, and a military career through Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Application procedure will be modified from past years as well as changes in eligible applicants and selection process of grant recipients.

Changes to past eligibility and application requirements include, 1) the applicant must be a full-time student enrolled in either the University of Hawaii or Hawaii Pacific University as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior year student, and 2) the student must apply through their counselor or appropriate officials in the career fields at the institutions listed above. The institutions will forward their recommendations for award of scholarship grants to the Aloha Chapter Scholarship Fund Military Officers Association of America which will make the final selection of the scholarship recipients.

University of Hawaii will recommend applicants in each of the following areas of study: teaching, nursing, and one each from the Army and Air Force Senior Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) programs. Hawaii Pacific University will recommend applicants in the field of nursing.

The new concept for the scholarship program for Academic Year 2008-2009 will implement further the Aloha Chapter’s goal: “Support of Our Youths” in “Building of Hawaii Through Education” - our future leaders of Hawaii.

Questions regarding this program may be addressed to Mr. Howard S. Okada, Vice Chairman, Aloha Chapter Scholarship Fund Military Officers Association of America by e-mail at:  okadahs@hawaii.rr.net or telephone 265-1898.

Four 2008 Aloha Chapter college scholarships have been awarded.

Following an important goal of supporting critical needs of Hawaii, two scholarships of $1,000 each went to honors students majoring in teacher education.  They are:
Erika Baldwin, a Hawaii Pacific University student whose objective is to become a high school mathematics teacher.  She said the example set by several members of her family in the education profession inspired her to become a teacher.

Zachary Mourad, also a HPU student, hopes “to learn different teaching methods and employ them in a way that will result in higher achievement for my students” and become a positive influence in their lives.

Two scholarships of $500 each have been approved for advanced course ROTC cadets at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  The winners are:
  Glendale Williams
, a 4.0 GPA Army ROTC student who is cross-enrolled from Hawaii Pacific University where he majors in criminal justice.  Cadet Williams served seven years as an Army NCO.
Aaron Patterson, an Air Force ROTC Flight Commander.  He grew up on Kauai, graduated from Kauai High School and attended Kauai Community College before transferring to UH Manoa.  He majors in political science and hopes to enter the security forces when commissioned.
